The formal process to yank Marc Dalton out of the legislature has begun now that Elections B.C. has accepted the recall application for Maple Ridge-Mission.

Organizers have until May 9 to collect 14,000 names required to force a byelection.

Liberal MLA Dalton won his riding by the slimmest margin in B.C., only 68 votes, in the 2009 election.

The start date for collecting the signatures, using names on the last voting list, is March 10.

Wilfred McIntyre, of Maple Ridge, filed the application, saying that Dalton “supported the deceptive introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax and refuses to represent the clear wishes of his constituents in the legislative assembly.”

The application says that during the 2009 election, the premier and finance minister said the HST was not on their agenda. Only 72 days later, the government implemented the tax by cabinet order.

“Maple Ridge-Mission voters deserve honesty and accountability from elected representatives.  A successful recall unequivocally tells this, and future governments, that they must openly and fairly represent those who elected them,” the application says.
