Fundraiser will be just ducky in August

Haney and Maple Ridge Rotary Clubs look to raise $100,000 for chairity

Tickets for the third annual Rotary Duck Race are rolling along as the Haney and Maple Ridge Rotary Clubs look to raise $100,000 for local youth organizations.

The clubs have printed 10,000 tickets that retail for $10 each to be sold leading up to the race, slated for Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Alouette River at Maple Ridge Park.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the race at 1 p.m.

Peter Davies, the event’s race-day river coordinator, said the goal is to top last year,  which raised $88,140.

He said none of the efforts would be possible if it weren’t for the sponsors, especially this year’s top prize, which is a 2013 Fiat 500, donated by Fiat of Maple Ridge and Maple Ridge Chrysler. The car is worth an estimated $25,000.

“That’s why people love this event. They love the idea of driving off with that car,” he said.

Besides the car, other prizes include the second-place prize of home furnishings thanks to Fuller Watson, worth an estimated $3,500.

Third place is a one-week Alaskan cruise courtesy of RBC Dominion Securities.

Other prizes include a one-week stay in Whistler, two foursomes of golf with carts at Meadow Gardens and a 32’ flat screen TV.
