Maple Ridge firefighters responded to a large brush fire by the Golden Ears Bridge on Sunday.
At 3:40 p.m., crews responded to a report of smoke in the area between the man-made duck pond and the sandpit by Wharf Street and Hazelwood Street in the industrial section below the bridge.
Initially, the fire was described as being around 18-by-nine metres.
Two engines plus a water tender from Hall No. 1 attended.
However, when firefighters first arrived, they had difficulty getting to the fire because the area was fenced off. They eventually gained access through a gate along Wharf Street.
It took 40 minutes to bring the fire under control, including the time it took to get to the scene and extend the lines.
“They pulled hundreds of feet of hose to get water to where they had to have it,” said assistant fire chief Doug Armour, adding that there was no danger to neighbouring structures.
It is unknown what started the fire.
The Maple Ridge Fire Department will not be investigating.
