Conservative member of parliament Randy Kamp set aside politics Thursday by announcing his office will keep a book of condolences for people to sign which will be given the family of NDP Leader Jack Layton.

The MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission praised Layton’s “tireless, passionate commitment to the things in which he believed” and offered his “heartfelt sympathy” to Layton’s wife Olivia, his family, his colleagues and friends.

“He could be tenacious but I always found respectful, even though we disagreed on a lot of things,” said Kamp.

“I admired his hard work. He is going to be missed in the House of Commons.”

Layton succumbed to cancer on Monday at age 61.

His death comes just months after he steered the NDP to official Opposition status in the House of Commons, a first for the party, which Layton had led since 2003.

Layton had fought prostate cancer since 2010, but in July announced he faced a second, undisclosed cancer.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. (EST) at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto.

People are encouraged to drop by Kamp’s office at 22720 Lougheed highway in Maple Ridge to sign the book of condolences.

Kamp will take the book to Ottawa and present it to Layton’s family when Parliament resumes in September.

The office is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
