A man died late Thursday afternoon after crashing his ATV on a dirt trail in east Maple Ridge.
The collision occurred around 5 p.m. about a kilometre north of the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women, at the east end of 248th Street.
According to RCMP, two men were riding ATVs on a forestry road when one of them hit a wooden pole.
The other tried to drive his friend out to get help, but the injured rider experienced more medical complications, possibly cardiac arrest, said RCMP Insp. Darren Lench.
A helicopter was called to transport the injured rider, but cancelled as the man succumbed to his injuries, which included "head trauma."
The deceased man was in his early 30s, Lench said.
A helmet was found at the scene.
Police have seized the ATV for examination and are investigating whether the man was wearing a helmet when he crashed.
"At this point alcohol doesn't appear to have been a factor," said Lench.
Unlicensed off-road vehicles aren't permitted in the area.
