A vigil was held in Maple Ridge's Memorial Peace Park in February following mass shooting in Quebec City mosque.

The House of Commons passed M-103 last week, a general statement introduced by Liberal MP Iqra Khalid in February, calling for all MPs to condemn Islamophobia “and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination.”

The motion was opposed by the Conservatives who objected to including the word Islamophobia and wanted all religions mentioned.

Ahmed Yousef of the Islamic Society of Ridge Meadows was glad to hear it.

That now shows the world "that Canada is at the forefront of combatting intolerance," he said in a release.

It also shows Canada is moving towards a more equal society, Yousef added.

"We're leading the world in the right direction," he said Thursday.

“It would speak to Canada continuing to be a world leader and a forward-thinking super-power … while other governments are taking steps backward, toward more Islamophobic laws and regulations."

Yousef credited Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MP Dan Ruimy for supporting the motion and creating a video explaining that the motion was not a law or legal measure, just a general statement.
