Maple Ridge man dies from stab wounds

A 36-year-old man died from stab wounds after an altercation in downtown Maple Ridge early Sunday.

RCMP were called to Ridge Meadows Hospital around 2:30 a.m. about a man having suffered serious injuries.

A short time later, the man, who was known to police, succumbed to stab wounds he suffered as the result of an altercation that occurred earlier near 223 Street and McIntosh Avenue in Maple Ridge.

The investigation lead police to a nearby apartment building and they are in the process determining how it relates to the homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation. The downtown area remains taped off.

"We are in the early stages of the investigation and trying to determine what occurred at the intersection in Maple Ridge. Early indications are this is not gang related, " said Cpl. Adam MacIntosh of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

The name of the deceased man has not been released, pending next of kin notification.
