Maple Ridge sign bylaw up for review

Bylaw staff want to hear from businesses on new rules to govern adverts, banners

The District of Maple Ridge bylaws department put on a presentation for council Monday as it kicked off a public consultation on how to clean up the sign bylaw.

The presentation showed banners hanging in front of stores, entire windows covered in signs, sandwich board signs blocking sidewalks, signs showing businesses that have long departed, and mobile signs supposed to be there on a temporary basis that now stayed put.

Sandwich boards are everywhere, but they’re illegal, said bylaws director Liz Holitzky.

Developers’ signs, intended to promote a new housing project, sometimes stay up way longer than opening day.

Holitzky wants to hear from the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce.

After the public and business has its say, a report will be written and a draft bylaw created by July.

More public reaction will be sought in early fall with the final bylaw to council by October.
