A Mission senior was the victim of a new car scam that involved sending $1,200 worth of gift cards to a scammer.

A Mission senior was the victim of a new car scam last week.

According to a Mission RCMP release,  a local man received a call from a company informing him he won a new car.

To receive the car, the scammer told the man he would have to pay a $1,200 processing fee in the form of Apple gift cards.   The senior bought the gift cards and sent them.

The man later realized there was no car and he was defrauded.   He reported the scam to Mission RCMP on Nov. 29.

“These types of scams are prolific, and the best defence against them is to speak to your friends and family – especially elderly persons – and ensure they are aware of these common scams,” Mission RCMP said.

“Just remember: If it’s too good to be true…it’s a scam; If someone threatens that you will be arrested if you don’t immediately pay a sum of money…it’s a scam; and finally, if anyone asks that you pay a fee or a fine with gift cards…it’s a scam.”
