A Mission woman recently lost approximately $45,000 in a cryptocurrency scam., police say.

According to a Mission RCMP news release, the scam started when a woman clicked on a job posting link for promotions and social media.

Police say she then received notification of the earnings for doing the job.  However, she was asked to e-transfer thousands of dollars and a large amount of cryptocurrency to “unlock” her earnings.

Mounties say the woman realized it was a scam and stopped.

"As often happens with these types of scams, the woman was then contacted by another company, claiming they could recover her lost funds – for a fee of around $2,000," Mission RCMP said.

"Mission RCMP recommend using caution when sending funds online to any persons or businesses you are not familiar with, and to spread the word about these types of scams to your friends and family, to help others stay safe."

The detachment previously reported cryptocurrency scams in 2024 and 2023 in which locals lost $25,000 and $30,000 respectively.
