Mounties investigating murder in Pitt Meadows

Police believe a man who was found Tuesday morning in a field in Pitt Meadows near the border of Maple Ridge was murdered.

Ridge Meadows RCMP were called around 10:30 a.m. after a passerby saw the man lying face down in the cranberry field at the end of 224th Street at 144th Avenue.

"The male victim appears to have met with foul play and homicide is suspected," said Sgt. Jennifer Pound with the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Police cordoned off the area where 224th Street turns into a gravel road and forensic investigators searched the area for evidence.

The body was found in sparsely populated agricultural area, near Timberline Ranch, where Pitt Meadows meets Maple Ridge.

Police have identified the man and are in the process of notifying his family.

Pound could not say how long the man's body had been in the field or whether he was murdered elsewhere.

An autopsy will be conducted on the body to determine the cause of death and investigators are expected to return to the rural area tomorrow to conducted another search.

There has not been in murder in the City of Pitt Meadows since 2008.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is asking anyone who may have information about the homicide to come forward and speak with investigators.
