New weather record set in Ridge Meadows

Summertime temperatures soared to record marks across B.C. and the Lower Mainland over the weekend, including tropical Ridge Meadows.

Summertime temperatures soared to record marks across B.C. and the Lower Mainland over the weekend, including tropical Ridge Meadows.

According to temperatures at the Pitt Meadows Airport, Sunday set a new record of 29.4 C, which beat the old record for the day of 27 C set in 1992. Records are based on the mercury readings at the airport, but in the downtown core, where pavement retains some heat, there were temperature readings as high as 30-31 C.

That made Pitt Meadows one of 12 cities in the province to set a new weather record.

Saturday there was no record, but the temperature was still a balmy 26.5 C.

"It's a summertime pattern that we occasionally get in May," explained Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones.

He said cooler marine air was held at bay by warm air from the Interior, creating conditions typical of a two or three day hot spell.

He said the warm air will be flushed out by the cooler marine air midweek, dropping temperatures from the high 20s into the mid-20s. There is rain in the forecast for the coming weekend.
