After 30 years, the Pitt Meadows library is moving to a new home.
The doors will close for good at 9 p.m. today at the old location, beside city hall. The library will open again on Feb. 29 at its new location, the second floor of the new Solaris development at the corner of Ford and Harris roads.
Movers will be arriving on Monday, packing the books on trolly’s and driving them to their new location – 12,000 square feet, including a 12-station computer lab, expanded areas for youth and children. It will also be able to hold more books and other library materials.
The new space also boasts warm colours, natural wood decor, lots of natural light and a view of Spirit Square and the mountains behind.
A new addition to the library will be the new radio frequency identification system (RFID), eliminating the manual check-in and -out of books. Barcodes on the entire collection of 32,000 books and audio visual titles will be converted to RFID tags and the automated return will be located in the breezeway near the entrance to the new library.
Due dates for all library books borrowed within the past month have already been adjusted to allow patrons to return their items after the new location opens.
• Anyone who needs to return items earlier are being directed to either the Maple Ridge Public Library at 22470 Dewdney Trunk Road or the Terry Fox library at 2470 Mary Hill Road in Port Coquitlam.
