One person was taken to hospital after a fire at Garibaldi Ridge Supportive Housing Wednesday afternoon.
Maple Ridge firefighters responded to the supportive housing complex at 11749 Burnett St. just before 6 p.m. on Jan. 12, after a report of a fire in a second floor unit.
“It was a relatively small fire,” explained Maple Ridge fire chief Michael Van Dop.
“It was contained to the suite of origin,” he said, adding that sprinkler activation predominantly extinguished the fire.
“The fire is not considered suspicious in any way,” noted Van Dop. However, the occupant of the suite was transported to hospital with severe burns.
Garibaldi Ridge is a 51 unit complex providing temporary homes for people experiencing homelessness in the community. Supports are provided on-site including outreach workers, wellness checks, life skills training, employment assistance, and referral to community services and support groups – to ensure people can achieve and maintain housing stability.

The building was evacuated for about a couple of hours before being turned back to the occupants.
There was subsequent water damage that comes with a sprinkler activation, added Van Dop, but everyone was able to return to their units post event.
“No one displaced and just the one injury.”
