As we step into the new year, we are excited to continue driving forward strategic priorities outlined in the City of Pitt Meadows Strategic Plan for 2023-2026.
We know that strengthening our relationship with q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation, investing in infrastructure and public safety, and fostering community spirit and wellbeing all help to enhance our local economy.
We are eager to make meaningful progress and achieve new milestones together, with the support of council, community members, staff, and our partners.
In 2024, Pitt Meadows had a number of achievements in economic development.
Our partnership with the Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce supported local businesses with a hiring fair, as well as a soon-to-be released guide for new local businesses and online business directory. Joining the Scenic Route 7 tourism collective will also help boost local tourism and business visibility as we develop our presence on that online platform.
2024 also saw significant progress on the implementation of the City’s Agricultural Viability Strategy, our action plan to support the sustainability of the local agriculture sector.
Some of the notable initiatives in 2024 include progress on our study to assess the irrigation needs of the local agriculture sector, and identify feasible irrigation sources, as well as our advocacy on much-needed reforms to the provincial farm property tax system. We were also honoured to have the opportunity to convene elected officials from our neighbouring municipalities to discuss and move forward on common issues impacting agriculture in our region.
The implementation of the new provincial housing legislation prompted updates to our zoning bylaw to allow small-scale, multi-unit housing and the designation of transit-oriented areas near transit hubs. While expanding housing opportunities, these changes raised concerns about impacts on our community’s character and infrastructure. To help address these concerns, we adopted an Amenity Cost Charge bylaw, which ensures developers contribute funds towards essential community services and infrastructure upgrades required to support new developments.
Additionally, we finalized agreements with Metro Vancouver Housing for the Heron’s Nest project, which will bring 115 affordable rental homes and a 150-space child-care facility.
Other key developments included strategic zoning changes to support growth at the Pitt Meadows Regional Airport. Ongoing collaborative efforts between the City and the Pitt Meadows Airport Society have facilitated new development projects, fostering new business ventures and contributing to regional growth.
Looking ahead to 2025, the city will focus on sustainable, well-planned growth through initiatives like advancing the North Lougheed Area Plan and implementing the Agricultural Viability Strategy and Economic Development Strategic Plan. A Complete Communities Project will continue shaping a vibrant town centre, while ongoing agricultural viability, waterfront planning, and airport development will create further opportunities for economic growth in the region.
