An armed man was taken into custody Friday afternoon, Sept. 27, placing two Maple Ridge schools on a Hold and Secure in the process.
Police were called to a home in the 21700 block of 121 Avenue after a report of an "incident", said the Ridge Meadows RCMP.
When they arrived on scene they found a person inside the house, armed.
"Out of an abundance of caution, police contained the surrounding areas. At approximately 3 p.m., one person was apprehended by police," explained Ridge Meadows RCMP.
Irena Pochop with SD42, said students at Glenwood Elementary and Maple Ridge Secondary School, were placed in a Hold and Secure, out of precaution.
"In the case of Glenwood Elementary, the Hold and Secure impacted only staff and a small number of students as school had already been dismissed for the day," explained Pochop, noting the district advised families of the Hold and Secure through the parent portal and then sent a follow up message once the Hold and Secure was lifted.
A witness, whose granddaughter had to stay late at school because of the Hold and Secure, described seeing police with long guns drawn, at about 3 p.m. in the 218 Street and Mountainview Crescent areas.
"There is no threat to public safety," added police.
