Police seized guns, ammunition and drugs following a recent traffic stop in Maple Ridge.

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit stopped a white van in the downtown core and found illegal drugs in it after conducting a search of the vehicle on May 29. Police also found a handgun and ammunition in the car.

The traffic stop led RCMP to apply for a warrant to search a house in Mission, where additional firearms, ammunition, body armour, an explosive device and a quantity of drugs were seized.

“All weapons, in particular firearms that are not registered or illegally carried, can pose a significant risk to public safety,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “Canada’s laws in relation to firearms are very clear, and a person is required to have a permit to own and transport firearms.”

RCMP allege that two of the firearms seized during the investigation were stolen, and one is a fully automatic assault rifle.

“Clearly, police are very concerned that this type of fire power is accessible in our community,” said Dunlop. “Investigators are making every effort to pursue charges against the suspects in this case, and ensure all firearms are legally disposed of.”

A 29-year-old man from Mission and a 37-year-old woman from Maple Ridge were arrested. Charges against the pair are being pursued.

Suspicious vehicle

Ridge Meadows RCMP are looking for a man and young woman in a pickup truck who were seen arguing near a West Coast Express station Sunday.

Police were called to River Road just after 7 p.m. after the pair were seen arguing, with witnesses stating the fight may have become physical.

“Police arrived in the area of the incident moments after receiving the call, but there was no sign of the people involved,” said Sgt. Jennifer Hyland.

“A witness managed to take a picture of the truck as it left the area, and this is being released to the public for a possible identification. Since the attending officers were unable to speak with these people, investigators want to ensure the people involved are safe.”

The couple was seen driving away in a dark grey Ford pickup with a red tailgate, “West Coast-style” chrome mirrors and a canopy with no back window.

Witnesses described the young woman as being between 15 to 19 years old, approximately 5’6’’ and 110 to 120 pounds. She had straight bleached-blond hair, which was shoulder length, and was wearing a white or pink tank top.

The man was fair-skinned and in his 30s or 40s. He is approximately 5’9’’ and 150 pounds. He has black hair, which was cut in a bowl style, along with a black moustache. He was wearing a beige shirt with grey stripes and blue jeans.

Roll-over crash

Two people were injured following a crash between an SUV and car Sunday in Maple Ridge.

A woman in her 60s was turning left from Lougheed Highway onto Kanaka Way when she collided with a car travelling west.

The SUV rolled over and the Maple Ridge Fire Department had to extricate the woman  from the vehicle. She was airlifted to hospital, while the driver of the car was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said both drivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
