Ridge Meadows RCMP volunteers are again using the department’s digital speed reader trailer to educate drivers about the dangers of high-risk habits.
In 2008, police had a custom digital speed reader trailer built as part of the Speed Watch program.
It was used extensively by volunteers throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as a tool to raise awareness about speed relevant to posted limits.
Last year, however, the digital display malfunctioned.
Volunteers consulted with local shops, but the repair bill was too costly.
It appeared the trailer was headed for the salvage yard, said Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk.
As a last resort, the Crime Prevention Coordinator contacted BCIT’s School of Energy faculty and program head for the Telecommunications and Networks program, Bob Gill.
The volunteers worked with Gill and a student to develop a plan, and BCIT took over the high frequency equipment and board level repairs as one of their community outreach projects.
“Industry partnerships are key to the BCIT experience, and our student Chelsea got some excellent hands-on experience with a piece of technology that will directly impact the community,” Gill said.
“The power of volunteerism is inspiring, “Gresiuk added. “It is remarkable what can be accomplished when people join forces for the betterment of a community. This was a great partnership with a wonderful outcome.”
