RCMP ‘may never know’ why Vancouver man drove wrong way through Massey Tunnel

A 26-year-old Vancouver man has been identified as the driver of a car that the wrong way through the Massey Tunnel and south along Highway 99.

Police say the man drove his older-style grey Volkswagen Golf south through the northbound land and out onto Highway 99 before hitting two cars just south of Highway 17 at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

He remains in hospital with “serious, life-threatening injuries,” Sgt. Lorne Lecker told Black Press Media.

“The driver has not regained consciousness so we may never be able to interview them,” Lecker said.

“We have not ruled out impairment but we may never know the actual reason.”

The man collided head-on with a Toyota Rav 4, sending a 19-year-old woman to hospital with serious injuries.

The 48-year-old Surrey woman driving the Toyota received unknown injuries.

A grey Honda Pilot was also hit during the collision and both people in the vehicle were treated by paramedics on scene.
