A man faces charges in a brutal sexual assault that took place across Metro Vancouver on Saturday and ended in Pitt Meadows, where the victim managed to flee the car.

Emmanuel Alvin Cameron remains in custody on charges of sexual assault, forcible confinement, assault and dangerous driving following his arrest early Saturday.

Police allege the 34-year-old New Westminster resident held a woman he knew against her will, pushed her to the ground and forced her to have sex with him.

The chain of incidents happened inside and outside of a dark-coloured Ford Explorer in Vancouver, New Westminster, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

The woman managed to jump out of the SUV in Pitt Meadows and waved down police officers who were in the area.

Cameron abandoned the SUV shortly after. He was arrested in New Westminster by New Westminster Police.

"The victim in this incident was severely traumatized by the suspect, who she knows. We commend the victim for coming forward and co-operating with our investigation," said Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. David Fleugel.

"She felt her life was in jeopardy during the ordeal, and she was very thankful for Ridge Meadows RCMP to be in the area, and for the actions police took."

Police are also looking for witnesses who saw Cameron driving in a "very dangerous manner" late Friday, Sept. 30 or early Saturday, Oct. 1. This includes driving with a flat tire, which had worn down to its rim, and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Cameron has been remanded in custody until his next appearance, which is set for Tuesday Oct. 4.
