Traffic backed up along Harris Road early Thursday after a crossing arm malfunctioned.

A malfunctioning railway crossing arm brought rush-hour traffic to a halt early Thursday in Pitt Meadows.

Canadian Pacific was called around 6:15 a.m., when the crossing arms on Harris Road failed to lift.

Canadian Pacific spokesperson Kevin Hrysak said an employee was dispatched immediately.

“As it was unfortunately during the morning, it took a little bit of time for the employee to get to the site and assess the issue,” he explained.

The crossing was deactivated just after 7 a.m. and traffic was able to drive through.

“CP apologies for any inconveniences or delays this may have caused commuters. This is not a common occurrence and the crossing problem was repaired and rectified,” Hrysak said.

An issue with the circuit that activates the crossing caused the malfunction, but at no time was there a risk to public safety.
