Surrey Police Service officer stabbed during arrest

Officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, one woman in custody

One woman is in custody after a Surrey Police Service officer suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds while responding to a disturbance Wednesday (March 9).

According to Surrey RCMP, officers from both police organizations, along with Car 67 – a program which pairs police with psychiatric nurses to respond to mental-health calls – were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. to the 12300-block of 99A Ave., for a report of a woman yelling, screaming and throwing things around inside a residence.

During the course of the investigation, the woman attempted to flee from the police officers, a news release states.

“A short foot chase ensued and a Surrey Police Service officer received non-life threatening stab wounds during the arrest.”

Surrey RCMP officers rendered first aid at the scene while awaiting paramedics. The officer was then taken to hospital for treatment, and is now recovering at home.

No one else was injured during the incident. In an update issued Thursday (March 10), police said a 27-year-old woman apprehended under the Mental Health Act was being assessed in hospital.

Surrey RCMP Assistant Cmsr. Brian Edwards said he has reached out to Surrey Police Service Chief Norm Lipinski to “express my concern and support for the injured officer and everyone else at Surrey Police Service who are feeling the impacts of this traumatic event.”

“Regardless of the uniform worn, my priority as the Officer In Charge of Surrey is the safety and wellbeing of all officers serving this city,” Edwards said.

The Mounties’s Serious Crime Unit is investigating.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the detachment at 605-599-0502.
