A Vancouver man pulled over for drunk driving was arrested Friday morning after police discovered the car he was driving was stolen.

Ridge Meadows RCMP received a report of a possible drunk driver in a Nissan SUV heading northbound on the Golden Ears Bridge into Maple Ridge.

The person who reported the drunk driver to police followed the SUV to downtown Maple Ridge, where police intercepted the vehicle. Upon seeing the police car, the suspect pulled into the driveway of a home on the 22500-block of Royal Crescent.

A police computer check of the licence plate number showed the SUV had been reported stolen to Burnaby RCMP on Tuesday, May 1. Police quickly took the 32-year-old driver into custody without incident.

“We commend the citizen for the actions taken in calling police," said Sgt. Dale Somerville. "This citizen kept police updated on the location of the suspect until it was stopped by the local detachment members. Police have future plans to partner with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to encourage all motorists to report possible drunk drivers.”

The suspect remains in police custody pending a court appearance. In addition to Possession of Stolen Property charges, Ridge Meadows RCMP are also recommending a charge of Failing to Obey a Probation Order against the man.
