A Coquitlam middle school teacher has been ordered to complete a respectful boundaries course to avoid losing his teaching licence after inappropriately touching his students, according to a B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch report.

Dana Mond Lum admitted to rubbing his Grade 8 students’ necks and shoulders and telling students he loved them between October 2014 and January 2015, the recently released report said. He also lifted one girl off the ground, holding her by her bent elbows, and gave her candy. He also frequently yelled at his students.

In June, the school district suspended Lum without pay for 20 work days and required to take a course on boundaries.

The provincial regulation branch reprimanded him and ordered him to take a “Reinforcing Respectful Professional Boundaries” course at this own expense through the Justice Institute of B.C., or else risk losing his teacher’s licence.

Meanwhile, a high school teacher in the Peace River South district was also told to complete a course on boundaries after he kicked a student’s chair and verbally abusing students.

According to a regulation branch report, while two students were up at Mark Walter Zatylny’s desk to check their grades, he became visibly angry, tapped a student’s chest and ordered one student to tell him how many zeroes he had on his report card.

In an earlier incident, he “failed to maintain control over his class, lost his temper, yelled, uttered profanities and had physical contact with at least four students."

The school district suspended Zatylny for a total of four weeks, told him to complete several courses, including anger management counselling, and directed him to keep his classroom door open at all times.
