An elderly woman is rescued from from a mini-van after the driver lost control westbound along Lougheed Highway at 105th Avenue and crashed into a traffic light Monday afternoon.

A man and woman were rushed to hospital after their minivan crashed into a traffic light Monday afternoon in Maple Ridge.

The man lost control of the van around 3 p.m. while travelling west on Lougheed Highway, slamming into a traffic island at 105th Avenue.

A witness at the scene believed the elderly driver swerved to avoid something that ran in front of his car but was unable to control the van and crashed.

The couple were moving from Chilliwack to Maple Ridge and had the van packed with their belongings.

Firefighters used the "jaws of life" to remove the woman from the passenger seat of the van. She was airlifted to hospital via helicopter with a compound fracture to her leg.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance with undetermined injuries.

A cat, which was travelling with the couple, was also injured in the crash. The pet escaped, hide under the van and eventually darted across Lougheed Hwy. where a RCMP officer rescued it.
