UPDATE: Vehicle plunges into frozen-over water-filled ditch in Pitt Meadows

Accident took place north along Rannie Rd.

A man is lucky to be alive after his vehicle plunged into a frozen-over water-filled ditch along Rannie Road in Pitt Meadows Sunday morning.

The accident took place just before 10:30 a.m., one block north of the entrance to Swaneset Bay Resort and Country Club where the Mercedes left the road and went into the ditch.

At first there was confusion as to where the accident scene was.

“It was just a communication problem. He phoned a friend who phoned 911 who had no real idea of where they were,” explained acting Pitt Meadows fire chief Mike Larrson.

The car ended up mostly submerged under the ice and water.

The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, managed to make it out before the fire department arrived on scene.

Paramedics assessed the man and he was not transported to hospital.

It is unknown at the time what caused the vehicle to leave the road.
