VIDEO: Fraser Valley cancer centre gets $7.4-million expansion

Funding will allow for 4,300 more chemotherapy patients each year

All patients being treated at the BC Cancer Agency Fraser Valley Centre will finally be under one roof, thanks to a $7.4-million expansion announced Monday.

The centre, located at Surrey Memorial Hospital, will increase its chemotherapy treatment chair capacity by 28 per cent with the addition of nine new chairs, allowing 4,300 new patients to receive treatment there each year.

Additional ambulatory clinic space, where patients consult with doctors, will provide 13,000 more patient visits.

Currently, some of those patients are treated in separate trailers on on the north side of the street. With the expansion, all patients will be able to be treated in the hospital’s main oncology wing.

“We’re doing a renovation and an expansion which will allow us to increase the number of patients that we see from the current number of around 56 per day to around 78 patients per day,” said Dr. Gary Pansegrau, the regional medical director of the BC Cancer Agency’s Fraser Valley Centre.

“We will be having a renovation of our pharmacy space which will allow us to mix and deliver complex chemotherapy treatments and also offer new and cutting edge treatment.”

The centre treats 10,000 patients each year. The B.C. government is contributing $6.4 million to the project, while the BC Cancer Foundation is committing to fundraising $1 million.
