It’s a new building, but that doesn’t mean local historians don’t see the value of a well-built structure that recognizes Maple Ridge’s architectural heritage.

That’s what judges with the community heritage commission saw in the new Meridian Farm Market building on the corner of 227th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road.

The building, with its peaked roofs and pioneer theme, received a heritage commendation last week from the commission, “for excellence in awareness of community heritage through attention to architectural and graphic expression.”

The Family History Group also received a commendation for its historical profile on the Haney family’s role in building Maple Ridge. The project is called Community Builders: The Haney Family and tells the story of the pioneering family that gave the central and founding part of Maple Ridge its name.

The Family History Group group that operates out of the Maple Ridge Museum has now created three such family pioneer profiles.

As for the actual heritage awards, Black Press received an award for Significant Contribution to Preservation of Historical Collection for donating the photo archives of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Times.

When it comes to reaching out and making history valuable to youth, Cees Van De Mond won the History and Heritage Research Publication award for developing heritage-themed geo-caches.

Meaghan Durupt received the Heritage Project by Youth award for serving as a youth advocate on the city’s cultural plan update task force.

Jeff and Debbi Davis were recognized with the award for Heritage Building for restoring and conserving the Harry residence at 20591 – 114th Ave.

And when it comes to restoring buildings, the 31st Alouette Baden Powell Guild received another Heritage Building award for restoring the Rovers DeWolf Den Scout Hall at 23461 Fern Cresc.

The Alouette River Management Society won the Stewardship of a Cultural Asset Award for being a non-profit group that is dedicated to the health and education of Maple Ridge. The society is now in its 25th year.
