Sooke’s mayor seeking re-election

Sooke Mayor Maja Tait will seek re-election.

IN a press release to local media Thursday, Tait said she has demonstrated “practical, common-sense leadership in guiding council with civility and fair process.

Tait’s 2018 campaign focuses on one of the most pressing usiues facing the District of Sooke: unprecedented municipal growth.

“Together we can realize our vision of a safe, vibrant and inclusive community. We need wise development decisions grounded in our community plans that maintain the unique rural identity well love,” she said.

“Let’s ensure our growing neighbourhoods receive necessary and improved infrastructure, health and community services.”

Tait has served 20 years on municipal council – six as councillor and four as mayor.

She said highlights of her first term include:

• Advocacy for expanded primary health-care services and Highway 14 improvements; town centre beautification matched with improved traffic flow and safety, including completion of the roundabout, sidewalks, signal light improvements and seasonal lighting.

• Funding decisions supporting new and future recreational facilities: Trail and park enhancements, SEAPARC’s acquisition of the DeMamiel Creek golf course and a planned $2.5-million expansion, planning for trail connections, and additional amenities.

• Strategic action on affordable housing initiatives, new business starts in the town centre, modernizing municipal operations and continued responsible fiscal management.

Tait said her second term priorities include:

• Confirming provincial commitment for access to family physicians and health services.

• Improve local roads and infrastructure and advocate for further updates to public transit and Highway 14.

• Match rapid municipal growth with emergency service capabilities.

• Purpose built affordable housing, daycare and support for seniors.

• Expand neighbourhood green spaces, recreation/ play equipment upgrades and trail connections.

Along with her mayoralty duties, Tait also serves as a director on the Capital Regional District and second vice-president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

Tait is married with one child.

Two other mayoralty candidates are also declared Coun. Kevin Pearson and political newcomer Mick Rhodes
