420 marijuana protests in Vancouver cost the city nearly $150

This year’s unsanctioned and unpermitted marijuana events on April 20 cost a whole lot of real money: $148,000.

According to a review by the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Park Board and the Vancouver Police Department, two marijuana events at Sunset Beach Park and the Vancouver Art Gallery resulted in costs for managing the protests.

Not including regular staff time, the management costs included: $99,400 for the Vancouver Police Department; $24,000 for the Vancouver Park Board, $13,600 for streets and sanitation; $6,900 for Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services; $4,100 for traffic, special events and emergency management.

According to a press release, the “organizers’ decision to host the event in two locations, with larger attendance than previous years, additional resources were required to ensure the safety of the public.”

Last year’s 420 protest event at the Vancouver Art Gallery, cost $92,500, not including Vancouver Park Board costs.

The city and park board are hoping to work with organizers to set up an appropriate venue for future 420 events.
