My Old Walking Shoes
You love the broad straight highway…
I love the narrow, winding lane
You go your way… I’ll go my way,
Through sun and wind and rain,
I’ve no desire to be a part
Of your vast hurrying throng…
Just give me my
‘My Old Walking Shoes’
And let me tramp along…
For how I love those little lanes
Where no cars go roaring by
With a winding road before me
And over me blue sky
Wild apple trees in blossom
Are just as pink and white
As the white clouds up above me
And the pink clouds crossing night
You can’t hear the wren sing,
Or take the picture of a flower
Roaring down your asphalt trail
At seventy miles an hour…
So you can have your highways,
And your big cars if you choose,
Just give me my little byways
And ‘My Old Walking Shoes’
