Josephine (Pina) Adele Doane

It is with deepest regrets that the family of Josephine (Pina) Adele Doane of Maple Ridge announce her passing on October 28, 2017.

Born September 21, 1930 in the Italian village of Rupa near the Slovenian border, Mom and her family survived the privations and personal dangers of the Second World War.In search of better prospects after the war, Mom emigrated to England where she met and married Mirko Bastaja. The first two of the couple's five children were born in England. Hoping for a better life, the family decided to move to Canada in 1955 and settled in Hamilton, Ontario where her remaining three children were born.

Divorced in 1975, Mom moved to British Columbia to be closer to her children. She found employment at BC Tel and worked there for 19 years.

Mom met the love of her life James Murray "Jim" Doane in 1977. They spent eighteen happy, loving years together until Jim's passing in 1995.

Fluent in Slovene, Italian and English, Mom was a voracious reader on a wide variety of subjects and often amazed those who knew her on the depth of her knowledge.

She loved travelling, her garden, opera, and her Chihuahua's: Max, Duke, Tico and her cat Mutska. For years, Mom was a dedicated member of Mizpah Chapter #36 Order of the Eastern Star as well as the Daughters of the Nile and valued the camaraderie and friendships she made as a member of those organizations.

Mom will be deeply missed by her five children: Nick (Beryl), Sonja  (Paul), John, Dan, and Helen (Brian); five grandchildren: Amorita (Scott),  Colin (Ashlee), Kalinda, Mark, and Olivia; two great grandchildren:  Raphaele and Orion, nephews Ronald, Igor and Alexander, niece Anita and Moms loyal sidekick Tico.

The family would like to thank her physician Dr. Liz Zubek as well as the caregivers and staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital for their care and  compassion.

There will be no service at her request. If desired, donations in her name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
