September 18, 1918 - November 11, 2018
We are very sad to announce the passing of May Hansen. Born in Scotland, and mother of 7 daughters, May came to Canada with her family in 1960. She enjoyed working as a social worker in Maple Ridge for many years. After retirement, and the death of husband Poul, May lived in Summerland, Mayne Island and Calgary. May was an accomplished musician (harp and violin) who played with great heart. In retirement, she took up fine carpentry, and built a number of instruments, including harps, violins and a guitar.

At the age of 87 May moved to Mayne Island and remained there, living independently, until her 98th year. Her favourite pastimes were writing poetry (often published in the local paper) and riding around in her little red Smart Car. She was a volunteer driver for MIALS. After reluctantly giving up driving at age 91, May bought an electric tricycle and was often seen zooming around the Island.

May spent the last 2 years of her life in Calgary. She died very peacefully, just a few short weeks after her 100th birthday.

May was pre-deceased by her daughters Peggy Jo and Mary. She is survived by her sister Nan MacKinnon (Scotland), daughters Patricia, Carol, Elizabeth, Madeleine, and Rachel, grandchildren, Rob, Aaron, Leah, Seth, Jonah, Rebecca, Emma, Sarah, Roddie and Eve and great grandchildren Brendan, Sahara, Aylah, Sorcha, Tierney, Katie, Oscar, Micha and Dylan.

The family plans to hold May's Celebration of Life on Mayne Island. A date is not yet set.
