February 1, 1959 - April 14, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Robert James Nelson announce his passing on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 in Maple Ridge, BC. Bob was born February 1, 1959 in Burnaby, B.C. and lived in Port Moody and other parts of the lower mainland before settling in Maple Ridge after getting married.
In 1987, Bob married the love of his life Emily and they later had a daughter Brianna who he adored and shared a very special bond. Bob had a long career with Travelers Insurance as a Senior Risk Control Consultant. This job took him all over BC and Alberta where he enjoyed meeting people and picking up art and other collectables throughout his travels.
Bob had a passion for golf, basketball (Seattle Mariners), football (Seahawks), fishing, cards and a special love of jazz and R&B music. He was athletic, loved to read and was also a talented builder and gardener.
But by far his biggest passion was for his family and we were so lucky to have such a caring husband, dad, son, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle who loved us unconditionally.
When Bob was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, his biggest concern was not for himself but to ensure that his family was taken care of and he worked hard over the last few years to make that happen.
He was also able to walk his daughter Brianna down the aisle and to hold his new grandson in his arms. These were amazing highlights and very proud moments for Bob, and he was very honoured to become a grandfather to Paxton Robert McClary on February 2, 2021.
Bob fought a courageous and dignified fight against his disease. Throughout it all, even with the ups and downs of his journey, he continued to show us his love, sense of humour and never give up attitude. He was an inspiration.
The Nelson, McClary, Gerrard, Dumont, Besuschko and Dunn families would like to thank all the staff at McKenney Creek Hospice, Dr. Quan and Dr. Okere and the Fraser Health Homecare and Nurses who gave Bob such wonderful care and support.
Bob is survived by his wife Emily, daughter Brianna (Mark), grandson Paxton, mother Dale (Gib), sister Tammy (Jeff), in-laws and best friends Mary & Les Dunn and Kathy & John Besuschko, Olga Arthur, Yvonne Gerrard and many cherished aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (Brain Cancer Research). Or simply put a Buddy Guy song on and lift a glass in Bob's honour. He would like that.
