May 17, 1926 - February 12, 2022
Bob in his 95th year, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Born May 17th, 1926 in Vancouver to Irish parents Fred and Margaret Stinson (nee Marshal). Middle child of seven: 3 older brothers Fred, George (Dode), John and 3 younger sisters Dorothy, Maureen and Patsy.
Bob moved to Haney at age 6 and lived almost 90 years in the Maple Ridge community. Up until his last few days he had the good fortune to live for 70 years in the house he built. Farm life, hiking to the hills with his brothers and speaking Japanese with his newspaper customers filled his youth.
Service with the Westminster Regiment and regular Army was followed by a short stint in the RCMP. The next phase is where he hit his stride. He was hired by Jack Stanyer to work at Haney Builders, a company he bought from Mr. Stanyer in 1964 and opened a new larger location on Dewdney Trunk in 1967.
During the 1960's he was a founding member of the ABC association of lower mainland lumber yards and in the early 1970's Haney Builders was an original member of Timber Mart. Bob was an admired and respected boss who remained actively involved in the business well into his seventies.
During the mid-late 1940's Bob found time between army service, work at the lumber yard and baseball games to court and marry Mary Franklin, his wife of 54 years. Their fun filled years together were enriched with many long-time friendships, sports, travel, charity work and most of all family.
Bob was a devoted husband, an amazing father and a wonderful supportive and generous grandfather (Papa). He was an active participant in life and the community, always ready to lend a hand.
Bob remained fit and active well into his eighties. Early days-baseball and hockey dominated followed later by fishing, skiing, golf, bike riding, hiking and woodworking. Not many mid eighty year olds are still skiing blue runs at Big White and boogie boarding waves in Maui.
Later in his life Bob was fortunate to marry Mary Workman in his 80th year. He appreciated her loving companionship. Good health permitted Bob and Mary to travel extensively, garden, fish and go for lots of walks. Although family and friends will deeply miss Bob's smile and positive demeanour we are grateful that he lived a long and fulfilled life.
Bob was predeceased by his first wife Mary Stinson (nee Franklin) and his elder son Dan Stinson.
He will be forever loved and missed by his second wife Mary Workman, his children Sherry (Brian), Tom (Janice), grandchildren Scott, Michael (Michelle), Holly (AJ), Kevin, great grandchildren Nyjah, Mykah, Ella and Mason, and his last surviving sibling, sister Maureen Holmgren.
Bob's family feels very grateful for the wonderful in home care Charlene, Judy and Jill provided. With his passing he is leaving a legacy of kindness, humility, compassion, generosity and a genuine interest in others. Bob would like to be remembered by taking a walk in the woods, home for a cup of tea with a date square.
