Roma Grace Awram (nee Adkin), 84, of Maple Ridge passed away peacefully October 24th 2016 at Ridge Meadows Hospital in the presence of family. Roma was the fifth child of Emily Louise Adkin (nee Tucker) and Robert Adkin, born on November 21st, 1931 in Vancouver. Roma was preceded in death in 2012 by her husband Peter after 60 years of marriage; two of her sisters Barbara and Gloria; and her brother Ted. She is survived by her brother Robert; son Phil (Lenora) and four daughters Barbara, Christine (Dave), Vivian (Peter), and Rebecca; many grandchildren as well as her first great-grandchild and namesake baby Roma. One of her closest confidants and mentors was her own mother, who independently raised five children during the Great Depression and was her hero. For decades they spent an hour on the phone daily, and this probably played a large role in Roma’s enduring devotion to her family above all else. Roma was considered our “oracle” long before there was Google. If you needed to know a fact, that’s who you called. She had a brilliant mind and a love of the news that was legendary, listening to the radio news all day long, reading several newspapers daily and then watching the evening news twice (6 and 11) on television. Not surprisingly she amassed great knowledge, sharp wit and strong opinions. She should have been a contestant on Jeopardy. Other interests included reading, bowling, cruising, and any TV shows from England and her trademark Pinot Grigio with ice. She was famous for her joyful and distinctive laugh. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Greystone Manor where she spent her final years and created some close friendships, developed new interests and resurrected old ones, such as playing pool, singing with piano and of course, competing in trivia competitions. At Roma’s request, a funeral or service will not be taking place. She was a strong supporter of women’s shelters and donations can be made in her name to Cythera House. A great lady who was deeply loved and will be missed by all that knew her.
