HEWSON ~ Salin Rannveig

January 11 1923 ~ May 25 2008

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Salin Rannveig Hewson (nee Finnsson) at Royal Columbian Hospital on the afternoon of May 25, 2008. She was 85 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her children, James (Gladys), Robert, Lois (Martin), Marilyn (Tom), Lee, Debra, Janice (Bob), Glen (Beverly), Wade, Mark (Kathleen), 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, brother Asgeir (Ruth), many nieces, nephews, family and dear friends.

Salin was born in Vidir, Manitoba, the youngest of 10 children. Salin married George Hewson in 1942 and came to BC to start a new life a few short years later. A kind and caring mother and Amma, Salin devoted her life to her family. Proud of her Icelandic heritage, she would often treat her children to Icelandic Fairy Tales she learned from her mother. Salin was a passionate gardener and spent many sunny days tending to her “Blue Ribbon” flowers and vegetables and enjoying the view of her favorite mountains, the Golden Ears. She spent countless hours at her kitchen table knitting, crocheting and working on crossword puzzles. Salin worked as a Health Care worker for Valleyview Hospital for 20 years where she made many lifelong friends. A longtime resident of Maple Ridge, Salin was an active member of her community, winning ribbons in the Maple Ridge Fair, volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels and driving for the seniors program. Salin loved to play piano, card games and Scrabble.

Salin was predeceased by her parents Sigurdur and Hildur Finnsson, 6 brothers, 2 sisters and 2 infant daughters.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 21, 2008 at 11:00 am at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel: 11969 - 216 Street, Maple Ridge BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Salin’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
