Steve "Birch" Birchfield passed away after a short battle with cancer at the age of 72.
Growing up in New Westminster, Steve was heavily involved in sports and his love of baseball in particular won him a scholarship to Washington. After returning to BC Steve was hired by the City of Port Moody where he worked for 32 years in the water department. During his time there he was heavily involved with his union, CUPE Local 825, becoming a staunch defender of his co-workers rights.
Steve retained his love of sports and spent endless hours supporting his kids on the fields. He was also an avid fisherman and loved to golf. Summers were spent camping and fishing.
During his retirement Steve would drive out almost every day to Pitt Lake to enjoy its natural beauty. In 2000 he met his current wife Margi Randall who shared his love of camping and fishing. Margi got him hooked on Mexico and they spent their winters in Puerto Vallarta making many new friends.
Steve made an impact on everyone he met with his open and honest personality and his love of life. He was the quintessential "man's man" and an old school gentleman - women and men gravitated to Steve for these reasons. He made lifelong friends in minutes.
To "Poppa", his grandkids Christopher, Taylor, Brandan, Jessica, Ellie, Megan, Nick and Kate were the world to him. And he was so proud of his children Lara (Ron), Ryan (Marina) and his stepchildren Rachel (Lance) and Jessica (Grant).
Steven is predeceased by his mother Janet and survived by his father Sidney, brother Greig (Marta) and sister Frances (Muzz).
Celebration of life will be had at a later date.
Goodnight my love.
