Wilfrid HARRIS

December 13, 2004

HARRIS - WILFRID DONALD died suddenly on December 13, 2004 of heart failure. Born December 20th 1918 in Vancouver Bill was a long term resident of Haney having attended school at both Haney Central and McLean High. He was a King Scout as a boy and earned his Gold Cord and Bushmen's Thong. In 1938 he began his career in the forest industry. By then he had already met Betty Don Dickie who he married in 1941. Bill was a member of the 436 Air Force Squadron and helped maintain the planes that flew in the Burma theatre. He came home in 1946 to Haney, Betty Don and his first daughter, Judith. Their first son David soon joined the family followed by Roger and much later by a second daughter Krista. He again went to work in the forest industry where he later became a lumber inspector and work for many years for Whonnock Lumber. After a four-year residence in Vancouver Bill and Betty Don moved back to Haney in 1950 and built a home on a portion of his parents' property in which he resided until his death last month. Bill was very active in the community involved in Scouting, the Vintage Car Club, the Historical Society and Masons. He enjoyed travelling and he and Betty Don had camped in almost every corner of Western Canada. They had also traveled across Canada a few times and to Alaska. They had a fondness for England and traveled there often to visit relatives. They also often traveled to Squadron and Burma Star reunions. An avid gardener, carpenter, hiker and sailor Bill was always quick to offer help to others and enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be missed by his immediate family but also by the extended family that considered Uncle Bill their dad or granddad too. A friendly smile, a gentle touch, these are the things that mean so much. Thank-you for sharing our sorrow. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation to the charity of your choice. All Bill's friends and family are invited to share in an afternoon tea and Celebration of Life at the Masonic Hall in Maple Ridge on January 15th Drop by any time between 1:00 & 4:00 pm.
