Re: Maple Ridge sues ex-mayor (The News, May 10).
This story hit a nerve with me. Not because I am associated in any way with Gordy and Mary Robson, nor have I ever patronized their golf course.
I am, however, struck with how absurd the idea of suing people for enhancing land, ensuring usability for those interested in the pursuit of ruining a good walk with a golf game, raising sheep, hazelnut trees, having their grounds open for fundraising.
In the idiot logic of Maple Ridge council, this does not suit the zoning of the area.
Interestingly, Maple Ridge council does support rezoning the area north of Dewdney Trunk Road (269 to 272 streets) in the destruction of more than 100 acres of living forest, natural waterways, habitat for owls, bears, bobcat, deer, coyotes, woodpecker, blue heron, eagles, and songbirds in their quest to develop the area.
It would appear, that the two, although clearly not related directly, have one common theme: the power of money.
Rezoning is in the best interest of council in the latter case because a great deal of money will be made. A proposed 91 homes, with a nice fat tax base to be had. At the very least, two cars to each home, meaning almost 200 more polluting vehicles added to our environment.
I find it putrid that, on the one hand, Mr. Robson can be sued for preserving and enhancing land, but it’s totally OK for the District of Maple Ridge to destroy a beautiful, living forest, filled with animals who rely on it for their very existence.
Shame on all of you.

Maple Ridge is trying to shut down Heather Hills Golf Course and suing ex-mayor Gordy Robson to do so?
Who’s money is our district using for this?
Correct. Your’s and mine.
I’ve never golfed at Heather Hills, but I have many friends who have. According to them, Heather Hills is family oriented (it had a children’s Easter egg hunt this year, with special family rates for golfing afterward), is lower priced than some other local courses, and an enjoyable golfing experience.
Who golfs at Heather Hills? Guess what, mostly taxpayers from Maple Ridge.
So the district is using our tax money to shut down a business service that many taxpayers enjoy. Give us a break.
And please, Mayor Ernie Daykin and council, pay more attention to the commercial buildings you own and let us play golf on the weekends.
