Conservative majority would be repugnant

Editor, The News:

Re: Coalition not a dirty word, but odious is (Letters, April 6).

Cheryl Katnich’s assessment of our current federal political landscape leaves me more shaking than shivering. Stephen Harper as prime minister of a majority government? The man has the personality of a postage stamp and, though early in the election campaign, the glue on his soles shows no sign of abating.

It’s no surprise that every one of his campaign appearances is so scripted and so lacking in a free exchange of policy initiatives and media responses that discerning Canadians are bereft of a true picture of what we’re in for with a Conservative majority, save the building of more prisons, fighter jets to the tune of billions of dollars and, if the lunatic fringe gets its way, talk of capital punishment. Calling Mr. Ellis.

After Trudeau, Mulroney, and Chrétien, I gave up on majority governments. They breed arrogance and agendas that are out of step with what most Canadians expect from their politicians.

What really scares me about the Conservatives is that their ideological soul mates in the United States are the Republicans. That’s as repugnant as Harold Ballard’s ownership of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
