Dear Editor,

[RE: LETTER: Fix Maple Ridge hotel soon or tear it down, Feb. 26, MapleRidgeNews.com]

There is no argument that the building does not look in good state, the ideal outcome would be a rebuild, replacement or better.

Fire insurance claims are often complex, not usually timely. However, that process is in the hands of private property owners and their insurers. It is not unusual to also have legal challenges, and the hope is for prompt resolution and to see progress.

RELATED: Work has stalled on fire-damaged hotel in Maple Ridge

I had met with the owners several weeks before the fire to talk about challenges and opportunities.

There were positive discussions on what the future might hold for the hotel, the property, and contemplate long-term possibilities given councils now endorsed 525-acre Lougheed Corridor plan.

The owners outlined to me what they would like to do, all very encouraging – however, those are for the owners to share.

The owners know council and the city supports and encourages higher and better use, and they are committed to something much better. There have been, and continue to be, ongoing communications with staff and council.

The owners have a wonderful goal and dream for their property, one that has my support to help them realize, one that can come about with time and patience.

The city has approved the restaurant to reopen shortly. In the meantime, we wish them success with another welcomed restaurant in our city.

Mike Morden, Mayor of Maple Ridge
