Letter: Judging volume and speed of east-west traffic

‘This risk is only going to increase.’

Re: Along the Fraser: Just a quiet country drive with Parker.

I have just read with interest the articles related to increases in traffic volumes resulting from the cancelling of tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge.

In particular, Jack Emberly brings up the issue of trying to make a left (westbound) turn from Laity St. onto 128th Ave. given the volume and speed of the east-west traffic on 128th Ave.

While there is a traffic light, it flashes green continuously for the east-west traffic unless interrupted by a pedestrian-activated control for those wanting to cross 128th Ave.to the walkway on the north side.

It seems to me that it would not be a great expense to install the necessary controls to allow for traffic activation of the signals by vehicles travelling north on Laity St. wanting to turn left (i.e. west) onto 128th Ave.

I believe that if this is not done, soon there will undoubtedly be a fatal accident, as it is often difficult to judge the speed and spacing of on-coming vehicles from left and right at the same time.

This risk is only going to increase if Maple Meadows Way is widened to four lanes from Lougheed Hwy to 210th Street.
