LETTER: Maple Ridge gets failing grade for snow clearing of route near school and park

Cities should be as responsible clearing snow as they expect citizens to be, letter writer argues

Dear Editor,

Shame on this city. The city will fine property owners for not clearing the sidewalks in front of their property after or during a snow event.

However the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ standards apply to our civic employees. I have noticed so many city sidewalks around town that were treacherous to say the least.

The straw that broke my back was the sidewalk over the 232nd Street bridge, the only way in this area to cross from Silver Valley to Yennadon. This is a very well used sidewalk for many to cross the Alouette River to walk young children to school, for those walking to enjoy, arguably the premier park in Maple Ridge, and for those who walk to and from the only convenience store or pub in the area.

Normally this sidewalk is very safe with a concrete barrier on the busy 232nd side and a steel railing on the bridge/river side. However this main pedestrian route had become a dangerous uphill, downhill moonscape ice-coated trek from hell. If you make it to Maple Ridge park the parking lots are nothing short of a mechanical bull ride. All three parking lots were a frozen, crater-filled adventure.

Absolutely embarrassing. If you’re a property owner you got to ask why this is. If you’re a renter you got to ask why I pay so much for so little convenience. Mr. Mayor and Mr. and Mrs. Council stop trying to cram every inch of wooded areas into row homes, condos or townhouses and look after the basics.

Glenn Hurst, Maple Ridge
