Dear Editor,
[Re: Council intends to replace golf course with ball diamonds, The News, May 2]
Regarding the proposed recreation initiatives, I support additional recreation amenities. However, it is important to consider whether this council is being fiscally responsible in its decisions or if the focus is more on achieving recognition for making the largest park investment in the history of Maple Ridge.
Phase 1 was akin to presenting children with a toy catalogue for Christmas gifts, while Phase 2 provides everything they requested.
[Mayor Dan] Ruimy’s election platform emphasized fiscal responsibility – will the budget align with that promise?
A sensible approach might be to upgrade the pool with fewer amenities, design the community centre to fit the available space at Hammond Community Park and expand the existing parking facilities, thus allowing us to preserve the baseball diamonds and golf course.
In 1971, the City of Maple Ridge acquired the golf course with an agreement to convert it into parkland once operations ceased. Currently, the golf course remains operational.
Alternatives include renting gyms and meeting rooms from schools or churches seeking funding, adjusting plans for the 63-acre Yennadon Lands to incorporate both industrial and parkland, and collaborating with developers of the Lougheed Transit Corridor Area Plan to add community amenities.
Golf Lane has no sidewalks and barely accommodates two vehicles. The proposed changes would significantly increase traffic on 207, River Road, and Golf Lane.
I encourage you to visit Hammond Community Park and Golf Course. Participate in a round of golf, attend the open houses, and complete the surveys. Your input is valuable in making informed decisions and sharing your opinions.
