Dear Editor,

We are in the midst of multiple compounding crises in this country. Workers are struggling to find dignity and respect in a turbulent economy and persistent pandemic. At the same time, the climate emergency is at our doorstep with communities from coast to coast facing destructive heatwaves, wildfires, and flood with barely any government support. Three months after the devastating floods in B.C., impacted communities still have not received enough funding to begin rebuilding.

We need solutions that address these massive issues at their root. In other words, we need a Just Transition Act that creates millions of decent, dignified jobs that put us on track to tackle the climate crisis.

It is possible to tackle the climate crisis while empowering workers. In fact, it’s something that Trudeau pledged he would do back in 2019 when he first promised a Just Transition Act. This critical legislation is what we need to retool our economy to tackle the multiple compounding crises that we are currently facing.

Now that Parliament’s back in session, there’s no time to waste. Our MPs need to pass the Just Transition Act.

Denyse Hay, Maple Ridge
