Dear Editor,

[RE: Former Maple Ridge resident appointed to the Order of Canada, Jan. 20, The News]

I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have just read your article about me receiving the Order of Canada.

Your article is beautifully written and comprehensive.

But moreover, I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude and elation to see that it mattered to my beloved hometown to read about my accomplishments.

Many young people grew up, learned from the teachers in Maple Ridge and went on to do great things around the world.

I did not expect to be counted among them, I was just given the freedom to develop my love for the land and our nation and its peoples during my youth there.

The rivers, horses, farmland, and mountains fed my imagination until nothing seemed impossible with enough hard work.

How I wish my parents were still alive, to share my pride, all of which I owe to them.

You may know that my father, Eric Dunning, was the owner-publisher of the Haney Gazette for 25 years.

Thank you for bringing me home with this article.
