Letters: ‘How to stop trucks sliding’

A semi trailer wound up in the ditch at the corner of Wharf and Princess Streets on Friday afternoon.

Re: Wharf Street closed to semi traffic (The News, March 8).

It is my understanding that the Chohan trucking yard is zoned light industrial.

If this is the case, how do you consider semi trucks running through residential Port Hammond and Wharf St. 24/7 light industry?

The business can’t seem to keep its trucks on the road.

The last time the trucks rolled over into the ditch at Princess and Wharf St., the roads were not even slippery.

Another time, they slid into the ditch at Hazelton and Wharf St., the whole road was blocked off.

I live on Wharf St. east of Hazelton St. Had I or anyone else had a fire or medical emergency, a fire truck or ambulance would not have been able to get through.

So would I sue the municipality for allowing this to happen, should my house have burned down or my wife died because an ambulance could not get to her aid?

For years, I have heard talk about extending Kingston St. in the industrial park under the Golden Ears bridge to the east end of Wharf St.

Common sense would be to do this before allowing a trucking company to run through a residential area 24 hours a day.

These are narrow roads with no sidewalks. Does someone have to die before you see how dangerous this is?

In the article, Sonny Chohan says he would have an escort vehicle if allowed to continue.

How in the world is this going to stop trucks from sliding into the ditch or rolling over?

I and many other voters do not think this should even be considered until the road from the industrial park is extended.
