Letters: ‘We need to put a lid on flying drones’

Thank you so much for reminding me what a waste of good airspace the current drone craze is.

Re: Earning your drone-flying wings (The News, Dec.  22).

Thank you so much for reminding me what a waste of good airspace the current drone craze is.

And, yes, even as the Ministry of Transport orders that no flights should take place nearer than nine kilometres from an airport, I have already seen one this summer over my home in Osprey Village – much closer than the airport limit and up high enough to create a flight hazard.

Of course, Jonathan Reichert of your story disagrees with the 90-metre-high ceiling limit, calling it ‘’boring.’’ Who cares, where aircraft and public safety is involved.

There are so many low-level aircraft flights from the Pitt airport, it is only a matter of time before an aircraft hits one of these.

As a regular pilot from Pitt, it is one more thing to watch for.

The hobby is generally one of males eager to invade the space of others with their newest lookie-loo toy and film whatever it is they see.

There have already been instances of spying drones, and blocking firefighters this summer from fighting fires while these characters scan the fire with their newest toys while someone’s house burns down.

There are some commercial applications to be sure, but I hope we get a lid on these personal invasions of privacy and register them all and make the offenders accountable when we can get hold of them.
