Re: Coun. Becker running for Pitt mayor (The News, July 8).

I figured something was up in April when full page ads started appearing for John Becker’s law firm.

I told friends and acquaintances that he’s running for mayor.

“No way,” was the answer.

My intuition confirmed when I read his June disparaging remarks about his fellow councillors quoted in the weekly papers. These have been followed by similar remarks with the announcement of his intentions to seek the mayor’s chair.

The last quotes of, “Not the huskies all running in different directions,” was particularly scathing, but nobody missed the analogy. Not to worry folks, he will bring independent thought under control by ‘agreeing to disagree,’ collegially of course.

Next will be the past practice of free lunches with ‘information meetings’ for seniors –the solid core of voters in a community.  You can fool some of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.

The fifth Tuesday of every month – a great concept – dedicated to making counsellors  “understand,” rather than personal growth. This will somehow bring everyone together, to all vote the same way. That might work with a whole ‘newbie’ council, but given some experience, they won’t be sheep lead by a shepherd.

All that ‘team building’ over the years hasn’t worked?

Voters choose candidates because they want someone who not only wants the best for the community, but independent thought, quite unlike federal politics, where everyone votes the party line.

A good-cross section of society and views will always work best at the local level.

I can’t remember when politicians last kissed babies, but such comments show his respect of the position.

This elected position should not be  ‘blown off’ as a simple task that can be done blinded folded.
