Time for a change when it comes to garbage pickup

John Lintelow says the municipality of Maple Ridge can negotiate a better deal for residents

Re: Council cool on garbage collection (The News, July 11).

It is impossible to understand the backward thinking of our ‘recycled’ councillors. Maple Ridge has evolved from an easygoing farm community to a vibrant suburb of the world-wide-known City of Vancouver.

Councillors claim our cost would go up if we were to have weekly municipal garbage pick-up. Wrong.

Today, privately arranged collection for weekly pickup of one container can cost almost $200 a year. If you want green waste to be hauled away, you pay an additional fee. There are other fees, too. Add them all up and tell me the municipality can’t negotiate a better deal?

Under the present system, we have garbage trucks from different companies going along the same streets weekly. It’s time for a change.
